Joe Stukes History Series Presents
IKE AND THE COLD WAR SPONSORED BY FRIENDS OF FLORENCE COUNTY LIBRARY AND STIFFEL NICOLAS As the Cold War grew in size and intensity following World War II, Dwight D. Eisenhower served two terms as president of the United States from 1953 to 1961. His responses to the many and varied issues that beset the western world, while simultaneously addressing the domestic problems arising from the readjustment to peace time concerns, are examined. Presented as a virtual memoir, the program depicts Eisenhower as reminiscing over issues and policies, problems and solutions, successes and failures, social and international crises, and the changing lifestyle of the American people, tired of war but uncertain of the path ahead.

From Okra to Opera: The Conference on Southern Culture
To mark the 50th anniversary of the 1962 Southern Literary Festival meeting at Converse College, Converse will revisit the business of studying the South. Southern culture has always been a living and diverse culture with roots all over the world. We will ask, “Is there Still a Southern CULTURE?” and if there is, what does it look, sound, and taste like? The festivities will include featured speakers, panel discussions, literary readings and musical performances, drawing from the scholarly disciplines of Literary Studies, History, Religion, Music, and Food Studies. The conference will focus on the intersections of “high” and “low” culture in the South, and the ways in which the rich working class and folk elements of southern culture have, in many instances, been reinterpreted in more traditionally high cultural mediums.
