Joe Stukes History Series Returns for the Fall
The annual Joe Stukes History Series will continue in Florence starting in September. Sponsored by the Friends of the Florence County Public Library, the Joe Stukes History Series offers Chautauqua-style living history presentations of famous historical figures. Three presentations will take place in the fall, starting on September 23, 2010, at the Florence County Public Library. The Humanities CouncilSC supported this project through a Major Grant in February 2010.
Dr. Stukes presented two programs in the spring of 2010, and the following three programs will complete the 2010 program series:
Thursday, September 23, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. - "Theodore Roosevelt: That Panama Canal Business"
Tuesday, October 5, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. - "James K. Polk: Why We Fought the Mexican War"
Tuesday, October 19, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. - "Joel Poinsett and the Trail of Tears" with Dr. Will Goins
All programs take place in the Stukes Meeting Room at the Florence County Public Library, located at 509 S. Dargan Street in Florence.
Dr. Joseph Taylor Stukes has taught at Darlington School for Boys, Presbyterian Junior College, Lander University, Erkskine College, and, from 1974 - 1996 was a professor and Chair of the Francis Marion History Department. Dr. Will Goins is a descendant of the Eastern Band Cherokee Indians and Chief of the Cherokee Indian Tribe of South Carolina. He is a folklorist, cultural presenter, storyteller, chanter-singer, dancer, artist, educator, and arts administrator
