2010 SC Humanities Festival

The 17th Annual SC Humanities Festival will take place in Chester, SC on June 3 – 5, 2010. Sponsored by the Arts Council of Chester County, the 2010 festival will highlight the history and culture of Chester and celebrate the arts and humanities. A wide variety of events will take place over the three days of the festival, including an opening reception, a concert, and an author dinner. The full schedule is below.

2:30 – 4:00 p.m., GRANTS WRITING WORKSHOP FOR CULTURAL PROGRAMS, Chester County Public Library (**Pre-registration required! Please register online.)

5:00 – 7:00 p.m., OPENING CEREMONY AND "ART IN THE PARK", Arts Council of Chester County, 123 Main Street
Enjoy a fabulous exhibit with a variety of artists, several of whom will be in attendance to display their art outside.  A catered reception will be provided.  The Opening Ceremony will take place from 6:00-6:20 inside the Ann D. Marion Gallery, with a foreword by SC Humanities Executive Director Randy Akers.  

7:30 – 8:30 p.m., FREE MOVIE NIGHT, Premiere of the film David's Boat: Voyage of the Swamp Fox by local filmmaker Pete Stone, War Memorial Building (corner of Main and Wylie)

6:00 – 11:00 p.m., COOKOUT AND CONCERT, featuring Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs; concert tickets are $15 per person and reservations are requested. Contact 803-581-2030 to reserve a ticket.   Co-sponsor WRBK will broadcast live from Main Street!
The Summit Restaurant will host a cookout on Main Street featuring a limited menu from 6 PM until.  Food is sold separately.

9:00 – 11:00 a.m., FREE CARRIAGE RIDES along York Street with history tour guide Bill Marion.  Wagon seats 9 people.  Tour leaves approximately every 15 minutes.  Carriage rides offered by CHC Adventures (www.chcadventures.com).  

12:00 – 2:00 p.m., ACRYLIC ART CLASS at ACCC.  Create an 11×14 painting of "Happy Flowers Bouquet" with whimsical artist Christy Buchanan.  $45 per person, all supplies included.  Reservations REQUIRED by calling 803-581-2030.  See Christy's works at www.allthingspainted.com.

6:00 – 8:00 p.m., "THE ART OF STORYTELLING" featuring local author & farmer Dori Sanders.  The Wilsons from Cotton Hills Farm will also present a short program.  Crossroads Restaurant will provide a catered dinner of classic Southern cooking.  The event will be held at Lowrys Community Center on Old York Road.  A community art piece will be created & given away at end of evening.  Door Prizes!  Tickets are $15 per person and are now available for purchase at the ACCC.  Ticket reservations are requested.


SC Humanities sponsors the Humanities Festival annually in a community in South Carolina. Started in 1993 in honor of the Council's 20th Anniversary, the Humanities Festival has been held in thirteen different South Carolina cities. Each festival celebrates the local history and culture of the host community, engaging the citizens in lectures, discussions, films, and exhibits and facilitating partnerships between cultural organizations and community groups.
