The 19th Annual SC Humanities Festival will take place in Summerville, SC on April 18 – 21, 2013. Sponsored by the Friends of the Summerville Library, the 2013 festival will highlight the history and culture of Summerville and celebrate the arts and humanities.
The theme of the 2013 festival is "Summerville: The Birthplace of Sweet Tea and Southern Hospitality." There are many exciting events planned, including lectures, tours, and performances. The full schedule can be downloaded below, and a sampling of some of the exciting events is also listed. Many of the events are free and open to the public, but several require tickets and advanced registration.

Tour of the Summerville Dorchester Museum
Part of the 2013 SC Humanities Festival
Guided tour of The Summerville Dorchester Museum with Mr. Chris Ohm, an authority on the railroad history of Summerville and the museum. The Museum is an educational organization dedicated to preserving the historical significance of Summerville and Dorchester County.

SC Humanities Festival Opening Night Festivities
Part of the 2013 SC Humanities Festival
A special evening that will include:
Music by the String Quartet of the Summerville Community Orchestra; a Welcome by Friends of the Summerville Library President Gail Mosocco; Guest performer Pamela Ward Chair; Dorchester 2 Student Performance; Historic film of Summerville's Golden Age; Poetry Reading by Summerville Poetry Society; a short historic performance by The Very Merry Players of Summerville; Gullah Musical Presentation, "Baptized in Sweet Tea" by keynote speaker Ken Burger; and a dessert reception

Trolley Tour of Historic Summerville
Part of the 2013 SC Humanities Festival
Step on the trolley and travel back to the Golden Age of Summerville thanks to the powers of storyteller Mr. Tim Lowry. Learn why Summerville is considered the Birthplace of Sweet Tea, and enjoy a tour of Victorian Era homes. Space is limited to 60 participants, 40 seated and 20 standing. Reservations are required.

SC Humanities sponsors the Humanities Festival annually in a community in South Carolina. Started in 1993 in honor of the Council's 20th Anniversary, the Humanities Festival has been held in fifteen different South Carolina cities. Each festival celebrates the local history and culture of the host community, engaging the citizens in lectures, discussions, films, and exhibits and facilitating partnerships between cultural organizations and community groups.
