2017 Liberty Week in South Carolina

The South Carolina Historical Society will highlight South Carolina’s role in the American Revolution through several special events during 2017 Liberty Week in South Carolina: June 28 – July 4, 2017. Scholar Doug MacIntyre will speak in Aiken and Florence, and several other special events will take place. South Carolina Humanities supported this project with a Mini Grant in May 2017.

South Carolina has long commemorated “Carolina Day” and the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, which took place days before the Declaration of Independence was signed. The South Carolina Historical Society will enhance several existing events as well as presenting two public lecture programs about the American Revolution in South Carolina.

Doug MacIntyre is a ninth generation South Carolinian who has conducted primary research into the 1776 Battle of Sullivan’s Island. He will speak in Aiken at the Aiken County Historical Museum on Thursday, June 29 (4:00 p.m.) and in Florence at the Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library on Friday, June 30 (1:00 p.m.) on the topic of “Devoted to the Cause of Liberty.” Additionally, there are Carolina Day Observances at Fort Moultrie on Saturday, June 14, a History Fair at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens on Saturday, July 1, and an Independence Weekend Celebration at Middleton Place on July 1 – 2, 2017. More information about these events can be found on the South Carolina Historical Society website: http://schistory.org/explore/events/liberty-week/.

The mission of SC Humanities is to enrich the cultural and intellectual lives of all South Carolinians.
