The Beaufort Three-Century Project will present a special series of events in 2010 leading up to the City of Beaufort's Tricentennial Anniversary on January 17, 2011. The diverse events will highlight local history and culture and include lectures, celebrations, reading discussions, oral history presentations, and a theatrical performance. SC Humanities supported the 2010 Series of Events through a Major Grant awarded in September 2009.
The Beaufort Three-Century Project 2010 Event Series will kick off with an Anniversary Event on January 17, 2010 at the USC Beaufort Performing Arts Center that will involve storytelling, oral histories, and musical presentations about the history of Beaufort. The event is free and open to the public.
A Tricentennial Lecture Series will also take place in January and February 2010 at the USC Beaufort Performing Arts Center, featuring three notable scholars discussing different parts of Beaufort history. Larry Rowland, Steve Wise, and John McCardell will cover Beaufort history in four segments:
January 15, 2010, 7:00 p.m.: Spanish, French, and English Colonial Era – Revolutionary War
January 22, 2910, 7:00 p.m.: Sea Island Cotton Kingdom and The Idea-of-a-Southern Nation
January 29, 2010, 7:00 p.m.: The Civil War in the Sea Islands and the Port Royal Experiment
February 5, 2010, 7:00 p.m.: Reconstruction and 20th Century Beaufort
The lecture series will have a ticket price of $10 per person per program.
