The Blythewood Townships will sponsor three events during 2015 Black History Month in the theme of “Celebrating Black History Through Honor and the Arts.” The events include the performance of an original play entitled “Waves,” an evening event honoring local black residents, and a gospel celebration and art display. SC Humanities supported this project through a Mini Grant in November 2014.
“Celebrating Black History Through Honor and the Arts” is the first official celebration of Black History Month coordinated by the Blythewood Township in an effort to encourage discussion and build community relationships.
The first event of the celebration will be the presentation of the original play “Waves,” which tells the story of the typical life of a South Carolina African American family during the early 20th century, focusing on a young girl who aspires to attend Allen University in Columbia, SC. “Waves” was written by Blythewood resident Constella Hines-Zimmerman. The performance will take place on February 20, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at Westwood High School Auditorium (180 Turkey Farm Road, Blythewood, SC 29016).
The ceremony honoring local Blythewood residents and their contributions will take place on February 27, and the Blythewood Community Choir Concert will take place on February 28 and will feature a special performance by the Bethel Baptist Church Praise and Worship Dance Team.
