The South Carolina Digital Newspaper Program at the University of South Carolina will be sponsoring several outreach meetings in 2012 to inform the public about this wonderful resource. SC Humanities supported this “digital newspaper roadshow” with a Mini Grant in March 2012.
The SC Digital Newspaper Program makes historic newspapers in South Carolina freely accessible and full-text searchable through a partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress. Over 103,000 South Carolina newspaper images are already available on “Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers,” and an additional 100,000 pages are being added through 2013. Two outreach meetings are scheduled for the fall of 2012. The SC Digital Newspaper Program staff will be in Laurens on October 11, 2012 to give a presentation to the Laurens County Genealogical Society from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. The program will take place at the Laurens County Library and is free and open to the public. They will also present at the Florence County Public Library on November 15, 2012 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Attend these events to learn more about the SC Digital Newspaper Program, how newspapers are selected for digitization, and how to use this fascinating historical resource.
