Found in Translation Humanities Lecture Series

The Columbia Museum of Art will present an educational lecture series to accompany the exhibition Found in Translation: The Geometric Abstraction of Steven Naifeh that will include a lecture by the artist as well as lectures by several scholars of art and design. The exhibit will be on display from May 18 – September 1, 2013, and the lectures will take place in June, July, and August. SC Humanities supported this project with a Major Grant in February 2013.

Steven Naifeh is the son of diplomats and spent his childhood living throughout the Middle East, including Jordan, Iraq, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. His paintings and sculptures present dynamic geometric abstractions that recognize the shared aesthetic aims of Western modernism and ancient Arab and Islamic art. The exhibit Found in Translation: The Art of Steven Naifeh will include 26 large-scale works of modern art.

SC-based artist Steven Naifeh discusses the relationship between Western and Middle Eastern Art and his own process of conceiving and creating art. The lecture will be followed by a book-signing.
