General Francis Marion Cordially Invites You…

ScienceSouth will host a special Revolutionary War-themed activity day at its location in Florence, SC on Saturday, November 8, 2008, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.. The program, titled "Family Fun in Revolutionary Times: General Francis Marion Cordially Invites You To A Revolutionary War Encampment and Food Tasting," will include a model encampment, a historical lecture, and food tastings. The event is free and open to the public. SC Humanities sponsored this program through a Major Grant in February 2008.

"General Francis Marion Cordially Invites You…" will feature Revolutionary War milita re-enactors from Marion, SC who will set up an authentic encampment and will display tents, military supplies, a live fire pit, and firearm demonstrations. Additionally, Dr. Chris Kennedy of Francis Marion University will speak about food during the Revolutionary War, answering such questions as, "How did South Carolina Revolutionary War soldiers find the food they needed to survive during battle?" and "What kinds of recipes did they prepare in the swamps and forests?" Samples of various recipes will be available.
