Historic Rock Hill will present the last event in a series of public programs on “Ann Hutchison White and Her Home” in January 2014. Ann Hutchison White is known as the “mother of Rock Hill” and was instrumental in the community’s establishment, including opening the first school house in Rock Hill on her property in 1854. The historic White Home was built in 1839 and was one of the first homes constructed in Rock Hill. This project's goal is to preserve and promote knowledge and understanding of the history, story, and culture of Rock Hill, SC. The Humanities CouncilSC supported this program through a Major Grant in February 2013.
“Ann Hutchison White and Her Home” has included a series of public programs in 2013. In April 2013, there was a program on the White Home's architectural history, and, in June 2013, Historic Rock Hill Board Member Ashley Barron explored Ann White’s role as one of early Rock Hill’s pioneering women. On Saturday, September 7, 2013, Dr. Martha MacDonald and several descendants of the White Family spoke about the White family's history and legacy in Rock Hill.
The series of events will conclude with a commemoration of Ann Hutchison White's birthday on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Participants can visit wtih Ann White as portrayed by Dr. Martha MacDonald, see the unveiling of new exhibits at the White Home, and enjoy birthday cake and refreshments. The program is free to members and $3 for the general public. The exhibits will be permanent and examine Ann Hutchison White's contributions to Rock Hill.
