Black History Month Celebration

The Charleston County Public Library will present a one-day history event focusing on the unique aspects of the African American experience in Charleston on February 19th, 2011 as part of Black History Month. The “Magical History Tour” will take place at the St. Andrews Regional Library in Charleston from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. SC Humanities supported this program through a Mini Grant in January 2011.

The Magical History Tour event will feature a variety of programs throughout the day geared for students, families, and adults. Activities will include the 45th Massachusetts Civil War Reenactment Group camped on the library lawn, giving demonstrations about the life of an African American soldier during the Civil War; The Plantation Singers performing music of the Lowcountry at 11:00 a.m., and the Hip Hop Hooks on Black History concert series at 3:00 p.m.

The goal of the Magical History Tour is to celebrate African-American history and culture, with a particular focus on life in the Lowcountry. The event will be widely promoted to students at the 12 schools in the West Ashley area of Charleston.
