Círculo Hispanoamericano de Charleston will offer several public cultural programs during Hispanic Heritage Month. Dr. Chester DePratter will speak about “Spanish Exploration and Settlement in the Southeastern United States, 1514-1587” on Thursday, September 22, 2022, and a film screening and discussion will take place on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. SC Humanities supported these programs with a Mini Grant.
Círculo Hispanoamericano de Charleston is committed to highlighting the historical and cultural contributions of the complex and diverse Spanish-speaking countries and of the Hispanic/Latino continental United States. This program series for 2022 Hispanic Heritage Month will give the Charleston community opportunities to engage, share, inform, and revisit topics embedded and or associated with Hispanic/Latino traditions. National Hispanic Heritage Month is annually celebrated from September 15 to October 15.
The series will start with a lecture by noted scholar Dr. Chester DePratter on “Spanish Exploration and Settlement in the Southeastern United States, 1514-1587.” Dr. Chester DePratter is currently the Research Professor and Head, Research Division, South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. The event will take place on Thursday, September 22, at 5:30 p.m. at the College of Charleston (Blacklock House, 18 Bull Street, Charleston, SC 29424). The event is free and open to the public.
On Thursday, October 6, 2022 at 5:30 p.m., there will be a lecture by Dr. Asela Rodríguez Laguna on “The Charleston Earthquake of 1886 in the Journalistic Imagery of Cuban Patriot José Martí.” The lecture will take place at the College of Charleston (Blacklock House, 18 Bull Street, Charleston, SC 29424).
On Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at 5:00 p.m., Círculo Hispanoamericano de Charleston will host a film screening and discussion. The award-winning Spanish film “También la lluvia”/ Even the Rain” (in Spanish with English subtitles, 2010) by producer Icíar Bollaín will be screened at Charleston County Public Library, second floor, 68 Calhoun St., Charleston, SC 29401. The film will be followed by a discussion and Q&A section of the film. “También la lluvia”/“Even the Rain” retells the story of Columbus’ first voyage to the “New World” within the structure of a film within a film. The film investigates complex issues of past and present colonization, exploitation, inequality, wealth, poverty, uses and abuses of natural resources, race and gender relations and many others.
These events are organized by Círculo Hispanoamericano de Charleston, funded by South Carolina Humanities, and in collaboration with College of Charleston Department of Hispanic Studies.
