Círculo Hispanoamericano de Charleston will offer several public cultural programs during Hispanic Heritage Month.
Join us for a showing of the award-winning Spanish film “También la lluvia”/ Even the Rain” (in Spanish with English subtitles, 2010) by producer Icíar Bollaín next Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at 5:00 PM, at Charleston Library Public Library, second floor, 68 Calhoun St., Charleston, SC 29401. The film will be followed by a discussion and Q&A session.
“También la lluvia”/“Even the Rain” retells the story of Columbus’ first voyage to the “New World” within the structure of a film within a film. A production company travels to Bolivia to reduce the cost of filming a movie on Columbus, but it does it during the national confrontation between the Bolivian government and the peasants o Dr the Water War of 2000. That encounter gives way to the exploration of two historical epochs, the 15th century and the contemporary one, surfacing complex issues of past and present colonization, exploitation, inequality, wealth, poverty, uses and abuses of natural resources, race and gender relations and many others.
SC Humanities supported these programs with a Mini Grant.
