South Carolina History Day, the affiliate program for National History Day, engages elementary, middle, and secondary school students in historical research and analysis while developing important skills. Coastal Carolina University is proud to be the home of South Carolina History Day. Each year, thousands of K-12 school students compete in a variety of history-inspired activities. Students choose how to present their research from different categories: paper, website, documentary, performance or exhibit. For the 2017 – 2018 academic year, more than 100 schools in six regions have participated in the programming, with students creating projects founded on this year’s theme “Conflict and Compromise In History.” The six regional competitions and state competition will be taking place from February – April 2018. SC Humanities annually supports this statewide program.
The schedule for the six regional competitions is:
Saturday, February 17, 2018 (9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.), Lowcountry Regional Competition, Charleston Southern University
Saturday, February 24, 2018 (9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.), Upstate Regional Competition, USC Upstate

In 2018, the top two projects from each division and category at regional contests will be eligible to compete at the State Contest, scheduled for Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Westwood High School in Blythewood, SC. The first and second place projects in each division and category at the State Contest are eligible to advance to the National Contest at the University of Maryland, which will be held June 10-14, 2018. The third place projects serve as alternates at both levels. In 2017, South Carolina took a team of 55 students to the National Contest, and two SC projects placed in the top 10 of their division and category.
