Author Visits Columbia Students

C.C. Pinckney Elementary School on Ft. Jackson in Columbia will host author and illustrator Chris Soentpiet on March 1, 2012 for a day of enrichment and inspiration for students and teachers. SC Humanities supported this program with a Mini Grant in May 2011.

Soentpiet has written and/or illustrated more than 20 books, many of which are historical. Soentpiet has won numerous awards, including the Society of Illustrators Gold Medal, the IRA Children Book of the Year, and the Parent’s Choice Gold Award.

Third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students will hear Soentpiet speak, and the author will also conduct an in-service training for teachers. Students will benefit from this program by learning about history, culture, and the importance of literacy and reading, and the teachers will gain added insight about how to make reading enjoyable and meaningful for their students.

The mission of SC Humanities is to enrich the cultural and intellectual lives of all South Carolinians. SC Humanities programs and initiatives are balanced, reflecting sensitivity to the diversity of ideas, encourage open dialogue, demonstrate integrity and are ethical in operations.
