Celebrating Jewish Culture and History in November

SC Humanities has sponsored several programs studying Jewish history and culture that will take place in November 2015 in communities around the state. The 2015 Columbia Jewish Film Festival, the 2015 Spartanburg Interfaith Scholar-In-Residence program, and the Greenville Jewish Federation’s program “Testimony to the Human Spirit” were all supported with Mini Grants awarded in September 2015.


 

2015 Columbia Jewish Film Festival

The Columbia Jewish Film Festival will celebrate its 15th anniversary with programming taking place from November 1 – November 17, 2015, including an opening party, a student film competition, and the screening of nine films. Scholar and author Edwin Black will lead a discussion after the screening of the film The Last Mentsch, on Kristallnacht: November 9. 2015 Spartanburg Interfaith Scholar-In-Residence Program

The Interfaith Association of Spartanburg will present a series of five public events in November 2015 featuring scholar-in-residence, Dr. Eric Goldman. Lectures on the topic of “What Film Can Teach Us About Our Religious Traditions” will take place from November 12 – November 15 at USC Upstate, Temple B’Nai Israel, Nazareth Church, First Presbyterian Church, and Central United Methodist Church. The Years after World War II should have been a time when Jews found great comfort in America. Yet despite America’s victory over Nazism, Jews continued to remain concerned about anti-Semitism and the various restrictions and quotas that limited Jewish inclusion.

Greenville Jewish Federation – Testimony to the Human Spirit

The Greenville Jewish Federation will present three public events in November featuring Holocaust survivor Robbie Waisman, who was liberated from Buchenwald in a group of 903 boys that included Elie Wiesel. Events will take place at Converse College in Spartanburg, Furman University in Greenville, and St. Josephs High School in Greenville. All events are free and open to a general public audience.
