The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston will feature an exhibition of two different bodies of works by Native American artist Dyani White Hawk, including both a video installation titled LISTEN and a photography exhibition titled I Am Your Relative. These exhibits will open on January 14th, 2022 and will be on display through February 26th. SC Humanities supported this exhibit with a Major Grant.
Dyani White Hawk (Sičáŋǧu Lakota) is a visual artist and independent curator based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. White Hawk’s video installation LISTEN presents a series of Native women speaking the language of their people. Each film takes place on the land of each participant’s nation, and viewers hear the respective languages without translation. The Halsey Institute commissioned a new installment in the LISTEN project featuring a Catawba speaker, and they are also presenting a mini-documentary with behind the scenes footage, giving viewers a look into how Dyani and her collaborator Razelle Benally create work for this project. White Hawk’s photography installation I Am Your Relative confronts the gross stereotypes and distorted caricatures that dehumanize and commodify Native women.
Several public programs will take place while the exhibits are on display. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
