The McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina presents a special retrospective of the life and career of Jak Smyrl, a South Carolina newspaper artist and illustrator. Southern Satire: The Illustrated World of Jak Smyrl will be on display at the McKissick Museum from August 8, 2009 – January 23, 2010. SC Humanities supported this exhibit through a Mini Grant in June 2009.
Oscar (Jak) Smyrl, Jr. (1923-2007) served as the illustrator and artist for The State newspaper for thirty-seven years and was one of the news media's most recognizable names. He captured local life in South Carolina with a unique perspective, and his illustrations include studies on history, politics, sports, travel, music, festivals, coastal regions, and Southern hospitality.
Southern Satire: The Illustrated World of Jak Smyrl will include a collection of Smyrl's illustrations as well as letters and articles. The exhibit will present Smyrl's legacy as well as the legacy of newspaper illustrators.
