Faith on Film Series

The Nickelodeon Theatre in Columbia will present “Faith on Film,” a Community Film Forum Series that will inspire discussion about issues of religion and faith. Six films will be screened monthly between July and December 2013, and scholars and local faith leaders will lecture and facilitate discussion following the screenings. SC Humanities supported this project with a Major Grant in February 2013.

The Nickelodeon Theatre has selected a unique mix of documentary and narrative films to include in the “Faith on Film” Community Film Forum Series: Persepolis, a 2007 French animated film based on Marjane Satrapi’s autobiographical novel of a girl coming of age during the Iranian Revolution; Where Do We Go Now, a 2011 film by Lebanese director Nadine Labaki about a remote, isolated Lebanese village inhabited by both Muslims and Christians; Love Free or Die, a 2012 documentary about Bishop Gene Robinson whose two defining passions, his love for God and for his husband Mark, cannot be reconciled by the world; Baraka, a 1992 non-narrative documentary film that explores themes via a kaleidoscopic compilation of natural events, life, human activities, and technological phenomena; Collision, a 2009 documentary film featuring a debate between prominent antitheist Christopher Hitchens and Douglas Wilson, Presbyterian pastor of Christ Church Moscow; and Band of Sisters, a 2012 documentary that tells the story of Catholic nuns and their work for social justice after Vatican II of the 1960s.

The films will be screened monthly at The Nickelodeon Theatre in Columbia, SC, http://www.nickelodeon.org/. The detailed schedule is below. Andy Smith, Executive Director of The Nickelodeon, said: “We hope to bring together Columbia’s religious and nonreligious communities for evenings of close examination and respectful, but critical, debate and discussion.”
