The Belle W. Baruch Foundation in partnership with SCETV will present the “Voices of the Village” event on March 19 – 21, 2015. Friendfield Village was the heart of Hobcaw Barony’s black community from slavery through the 1950s. The outreach event will feature Robert McClary, one of the last living residents of Friendfield Village, in a lecture and panel discussion, among other events. SC Humanities supported this project with a Mini Grant in February 2015.
The “Voices of the Village” event will strengthen the public’s understanding of the African American history of Hobcaw Barony. The event will partner with The Slave Dwelling Project, an organization established to draw attention to the need to preserve extant structures related to African American history and the stories of those who dwelled in them.

9 am – 12 pm – “A Public Journey Through the Village”
Joseph McGill and Lee Brockington will share stories of the families while in Hobcaw’s Friendfield Plantation. Former resident of Friendfield Robert McClary and his family will be attending as well. Also present Saturday morning is Dr. Karen Smith, archaeologist with the SC Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology in Columbia. She will be showcasing artifacts found during her excavations on the plantation. Laura Herriott, a resident of Sandy Island, is bringing samples of her lowcountry cooking for participants to enjoy.
