The Arts Council of York County, in partnership with Historic Rock Hill, the York County Quilters, and the City of Rock Hill, will present the exhibition Quilts Tell Stories: An Exhibition of Historic and Contemporary Quilts from March 25 – April 28, 2011. The exhibit will be on display at the historic White Home and the Center for the Arts in Rock Hill. SC Humanities helped support this exhibit project through a Mini Grant in November 2010.
Quilts Tell Stories will feature both historic and contemporary quilts that have been collected through a submission process from area quilters. A jury will select the quilts that will be on display in the exhibit.
In addition to the exhibit, there will be several collateral events taking place in April, including an opening reception on Thursday, April 7 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. during which quilters will be on hand to tell the stories behind their quilts. There will be a complimentary exhibit on display at Gallery Up showing pieces by textile design artist Terry Jarrard-Dimond. Finally, there will be a “Quilts Tell Stories Luncheon & Panel Discussion” on Friday, April 15 at 12:00 p.m. that will feature a panel of scholars discussing the history and legacy of quilts, including author Laurel Horton, Dr. Eddie Lee of Winthrop University, Wade Fairey of Historic Rock Hill, and Wynell Shows and Martha Mitchell, two long-time members of York County Quilters.
