Randy Akers Wins 2012 Literacy Leaders Award

Dr. Randy Akers, Executive Director of SC Humanities, was honored with a 2012 Annual Literacy Leaders Award on Tuesday, September 11, 2012. The Awards are presented annually by the University of South Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science.

Akers was recognized for his work to improve literacy and encourage reading in South Carolina through such events as the annual South Carolina Book Festival which includes a Children’s Fieldtrip Day that focuses specifically on literacy. As Executive Director of The Humanities CouncilSC for 24 years, Akers has been involved in numerous programs and grant-funded projects that have highlighted literature, reading, and literacy across the state.

Other 2012 honorees were professor and naturalist Rudy Mancke, who is well-known as being host of SCETV’s NatureScene, and the South Carolina Book Awards Program. The Literacy Leaders Awards were established in 2007 as part of the School of Library and Information Science’s literacy outreach
