Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Pavilion to Open in Mt. Pleasant

The Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Pavilion, sponsored in part by SC Humanities, will have a grand opening and dedication ceremony on July 5, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Part of the new Memorial Waterfront Park in Mt. Pleasant, SC, the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Pavilion is a permanent structure showcasing the history and art of sweetgrass basket making, an important part of the Gullah culture and heritage in coastal South Carolina.

The Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Pavilion houses an exhibit on the history of sweetgrass basketmaking and will serve as a venue in which local basketmakers can demonstrate their craft. SC Humanities supported the fabrication and design of the exhibit, which will feature three informative kiosks, display cases for baskets, and a video viewing area that will screen several documentaries on sweetgrass baskets that are also partially funded by the Council. The annual attendance is anticipated to be in the thousands.

The grand opening and dedication of the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Pavilion will feature basket making demonstrations, African fabric art, and performances from We Be Brethren, a traditional gospel group. The celebration is free and open to the public.

The mission of SC Humanities is to enrich the cultural and intellectual lives of all South Carolinians. SC Humanities programs and initiatives are balanced, reflecting sensitivity to the diversity of ideas, encourage open dialogue, demonstrate integrity, and are ethical in operations.
