The After Slavery Project will host a one-day workshop for teachers, history professionals, and the general public about “Teaching the New History of Emancipation in the Carolinas” on Friday, February 1, 2013 in Charleston. The workshop will include a keynote address by noted historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Dr. Eric Foner. SC Humanities supported this project with a Mini Grant in January 2013.
The workshop will initiate a much-need exchange about the legacies of the Civil War and how they are taught in the classrooms of South Carolina and North Carolina. Over 60 teachers are expected to attend, as well as members of the general public who are interested in the history of emancipation.
The workshop will take place at the Addlestone Library at the College of Charleston at 205 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29401 and will start at 9:30 a.m. At 2:30 p.m. Dr. Eric Foner, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery, will give a keynote address on the topic of “The New History of Emancipation.” The workshop requires registration, but the keynote address is free and open to the general public.
