SC Humanities is pleased to announce a new category of grant opportunity for undergraduate students in colleges or universities. Student Research Fellowships support research and scholarship of important topics in the humanities. The deadline for applications for the inaugural round of Student Research Fellowships is Wednesday, January 15, 2013.
Student Research Fellowships are available and awarded on a competitive basis to undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior years attending an accredited university or college in the State of South Carolina to explore research and scholarship in the humanities. Student Research Fellowships support research in the study of history, philosophy and ethics, literature, linguistics, languages, jurisprudence, cultural anthropology, archaeology, comparative religions, art history and/or criticism, folklore, or interdisciplinary scholarship in these areas. Special consideration is given to projects that have a South Carolina focus or component. In FY2013, the maximum award amount for a Student Research Fellowship is $1,000.
SC Humanities Board of Directors made the decision to offer Student Research Fellowships after feedback received from deans and professors who attended the Humanities in Higher Education Summits in 2009 and 2011. Humanities deans and professors indicated that there were not as many research opportunities available for students majoring in humanities disciplines and that such an opportunity would be encouraging in departments that are often losing funding and students.
Executive Director Randy Akers said: “I believe it is important to support the work of future scholars and professionals in the humanities and to further stress the viability of the humanities in an increasingly technological age.”
