The American Revolutionary War in South Carolina

The South Carolina State Museum will open a new temporary exhibit, The American Revolutionary War in South Carolina, on Saturday, May 24.  The exhibit will examine the major role that South Carolina played in the American Revolutionary War. Additionally, five public events will take place in June 2014. SC Humanities supported this project with a Major Grant in September 2013.

Over 200 land engagements (battles and skirmishes) took place in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War, which was more than any other colony. The American Revolutionary War in South Carolina exhibit explores a time of great turmoil in South Carolina, which for over a century had been an English colony. The exhibit will also highlight major battles that took place in South Carolina, including the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, the Cherokee Attack and the Battle of Cowpens, as well as the role that African Americans and women played in the war.

Additionally, several public programs about the Revolutionary War in South Carolina will take place in June.
