The South Carolina Encyclopedia Gains New Life

SC Humanities is pleased to announce that three guides to The South Carolina Encyclopedia have been published by the University of South Carolina Press as ebooks. Edited by Dr. Walter Edgar, The South Carolina Encyclopedia Guide to the Counties of South Carolina, The South Carolina Encyclopedia Guide to the American Revolution in South Carolina, and The South Carolina Encyclopedia Guide to the Governors of South Carolina are now available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other ebooksellers.

Forthcoming in this series are Palmetto Profiles: The South Carolina Encyclopedia Guide to the South Carolina Hall of Fame, edited by Dr. W. Eric Emerson and to be available in September, and The South Carolina Encyclopedia Guide to South Carolina Writers edited by Dr. Tom Mack and to be published in March. Both guides will be available in ebook, paperback, and hardcover formats. Several additional guides are being planned for release in Fall 2014 and beyond.

The South Carolina Encyclopedia, edited by Dr. Walter Edgar, was originally published in 2006 to great acclaim, and over 18,500 copies of the volume have been sold. SC Humanities partnered with the University of South Carolina Press and the USC Institute for Southern Studies to produce the 1,120-page volume by coordinating a ten-year planning effort and major fundraising campaign. A fourth printing of this landmark volume is now planned for later this year.

The new ebook guides to the encyclopedia are all edited by or under the direction of Dr. Edgar, and several of them offer updated information about the guide’s specific topic. The counties guide includes data from the 2010 census; the guide to the governors expands the listings from the print encyclopedia to include entries on appointed as well as elected governors and to update the biographies of more recent holders of the office; and the guide to the South Carolina Hall of Fame and to South Carolina writers each includes new and updated entries on their respective subjects.
