Walterboro’s House

The Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society is updating the interpretive elements at the historic Bedon-Lucas House to better reflect the history of Walterboro and Colleton County. The changes will be unveiled at an Open House taking place on Sunday, November 13. SC Humanities supported this project with a Mini Grant in June 2016.

The reinterpretation project will include inventorying the many donated historic items and pieces of furniture currently at the property and better relating them to the full history of Colleton County. The Project Director said, “{Previously} the interpretation focused on the donor or the artifact and not the overall historical context.” This project re-evaluates the artifacts and will place them in themed rooms that reflect different time periods. One room has already been completed that reflects the Victorian Era in Colleton County.

The Open House will be open to the public and take place on Sunday, November 13 from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m., with a public program scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

The Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society preserves historical materials, encourages protection of historic buildings, promotes an appreciation of Colleton County’s architectural assets, and places historical markers at important sites.
