The Olympia Mill Village Museum will celebrate the dedication of a new historical marker on their site on Sunday, February 13th at 2:00 p.m. This programming was supported with funding from a Growth Grant from South Carolina Humanities. Funding for the Growth Grants has been provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
The historical marker gives official recognition of the historic old Olympia Mill School, 1901 – 1909, as well as a permanent tribute to the Olympia Mill Village heritage. After the dedication, the original Museum house and Olympia School Annex will be open for tours.
Per the South Carolina Historical Properties Record, “The Olympia Mill School is significant as the first school established by the Olympia Mill, in Richland County, during a rapid period of industrialization in and around the state capital, Columbia. The Olympia Mill School maintains a high degree of historic integrity on the exterior. It is a two-story frame, residential building with a rectangular plan, a lateral gable saltbox roof, and a hip roof front porch, all features that are original to its construction in 1901.”
