Redcliffe Plantation’s Evolving Landscape

Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site will present a special family-friendly education day on Saturday, April 11, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Visitors can learn about the landscape history of the plantation grounds, which were the site of fascinating agricultural experimentation by James Henry Hammond. SC Humanities supported this project with a Mini Grant in October 2014.

Redcliffe Plantation, completed in 1859, was once the home of James Henry Hammond, three generations of his descendants, and numerous African American families who worked at the site as slaves and later free men and women.

This event will include a series of educational stations located at sites of interest around the property. Guests will learn about the historical layout of Redcliffe’s grounds. Tours of the house will be held at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., and the program will also include tours of a modern lily nursery located on what was part of the plantation to illustrate the transition to contemporary land usage.

Program admission is free. For more information call 803-827-1473 or email redcliffe@scprt.com or jennsummers19@gmail.com. For more information about the lily nursery, visit http://jenksfarmer.com/.
