SC Humanities Launches Revolutionary Perspectives Speaker Series Across South Carolina

SC Humanities proudly announces the launch of the “Revolutionary Perspectives” speaker series, an exciting new extension of its longstanding Speakers Bureau. Funded by the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission (SC250), this series highlights the crucial yet often-overlooked roles South Carolinians played in the American Revolutionary War. Expert historians and cultural scholars will present engaging public talks throughout the state, promoting deeper historical understanding and civic engagement.

The Revolutionary Perspectives series will feature distinguished speakers such as Dr. Elizabeth Chew, CEO of the South Carolina Historical Society; historian Tom Elmore; author Kate Salley Palmer; historian and educator Donald West; preservation advocate Aliene Shields Humphries; and historians Dr. Alice Taylor-Colbert and Fritz Hamer. Each speaker will address pivotal Revolutionary War themes, including the state’s critical contributions, local impacts, and diverse historical perspectives.

“One of SC Humanities’ longstanding program priorities is the Speakers Bureau. Through this program, some of South Carolina’s finest scholars travel throughout the state to share their interests and knowledge of the humanities and to spark discussions about human values, traditions, and cultures,” said Randy Akers, Executive Director of SC Humanities. “We’re thrilled to extend this initiative with Revolutionary Perspectives, bringing deeper insight and wider accessibility to our state’s rich Revolutionary history.”

Programs will take place statewide in partnership with museums, libraries, and community organizations. All events are free and open to the public, fostering inclusive dialogue and lifelong learning.

SC Humanities invites nonprofit groups and public agencies to host these enlightening programs. Each host organization receives $350 toward the speaker honorarium, with matching contributions required through in-kind or additional funding.
