Two Grant-Funded Documentaries to be Screened on Pawley’s Island

The film festival at the annual Pawley’s Island Festival of Music and Art (September 18 – October 2, 2011) will include screenings of two documentaries supported by SC Humanities: Saving Sandy Island and Nothing to Prove: Mac Arnold’s Return to the Blues.

Saving Sandy Island will be shown on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at the Tara Theater of the Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort. Tickets are required. Saving Sandy Island tells the story of the historic Gullah community on Sandy Island and how they worked with a coalition to save the land and culture of the island. A discussion of the documentary with producer Betsy Newman and Lee Brockington of the Hobcaw Barony in Georgetown will follow the screening. Betsy Newman will also introduce her new documentary Belle Baruch, tentatively scheduled to premiere in November 2011, that was supported by SC Humanities through a Major Grant in September 2010.

Nothing to Prove: Mac Arnold’s Return to the Blues will be shown on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at the Tara Theater of the Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort. Tickets are required. This documentary follows South Carolina blues musician Mac Arnold on a journey around the country, bringing his unique Southern sound to a national public.
