UNAPOLOGETIC Screening

The Luminal Theater will screen the 2016 documentary UNAPOLOGETIC on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at a theater in Northeast Columbia. The film follows two female activists in Chicago fighting for racial equity. An intergenerational discussion about activism in South Carolina will take place on September 22. SC Humanities supported this program with a Mini Grant.

Set during the height of the Movement for Black Lives in Chicago, UNAPOLOGETIC captures a community of millennial organizers confronting violence against its Black residents. The film will be screened in Columbia at Spotlight Cinemas (201 Columbia Mall Blvd Ste 211, Columbia, SC 29223) as part of a program series sponsored by The Luminal Theater. The screening will start at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 23. One of the film’s subjects, Janaé Bonsu, will participate in a post-screening talkback and Q&A.

On Wednesday, September 22, the Luminal Theater will host an intergenerational discussion on the history and current state of activism in South Carolina, particularly in the Midlands, at Carolina Film Network studios in West Columbia (1117 B Avenue, West Columbia, South Carolina 29169). A short film by a local filmmaker, TBD, will also be screened at this event. A follow-up intergenerational discussion is also tentatively planned.
