Wonders of Writing Symposium

Spartanburg Community College will present the Wonders of Writing (WOW) 2019 Symposium on Thursday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m. at their downtown campus. This program brings visionary authors to Spartanburg in order to share their art with a diverse audience and encourage critical reflection. SC Humanities supported this program with a Fast Track Literary Grant.

In 2019, the WOW Symposium will include two South Carolina authors, George Singleton and Scott Gould, with their two newly published books: Gould’s 2017 Strangers to Temptation and Singleton’s 2019 Staff Picks. As short story collections, these books offer multiple perspectives on themes like race, religion, and behavioral norms in Southern communities. Following the reading, the authors will mingle with attendees, and books will be available for purchase. The authors will also interact with students at Spartanburg Community College on Friday, September 13.

Scott Gould’s collection of stories, Strangers to Temptation, was published by Hub City Press in 2017. His work has appeared in Kenyon Review, Crazyhorse, Carolina Quarterly, storySouth, New Madrid Journal, The Bitter Southerner, Black Warrior Review, New Ohio Review, The Raleigh Review, Pembroke Magazine, New Stories from the South, and New Southern Harmonies, among other publications. He is a two-time winner of the Individual Artist Fellowship in Prose from the South Carolina Arts Commission and a past winner of the Fiction Fellowship from the South Carolina Academy of Authors. Gould chairs the creative writing department at the S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities in Greenville.

George Singleton has published eight collections of stories, two novels, and a book of writing advice. His fiction has appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s, New Stories from the South, dOne Story, and elsewhere. A former Guggenheim recipient, Singleton has received a Pushcart Prize, the Hillsdale Award, and the Corrington Award for Literary Excellence. He’s a member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers, and holds the John C. Cobb Professor in the Humanities chair at Wofford College.
