The College of Charleston will host the 2021 International Conference on Romanticism on October 14th – 16th. There will be a variety of panels and programs for conference attendees over the weekend, including two virtual events that will be open to the general public. SC Humanities supported this program with a Mini Grant.
The “Charleston Unbound” panel will look at race and history in Charleston. The panel will be aired on Facebook Live on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at 5:30 PM – 6:45 PM. Charleston is marketed to thousands of tourists annually as a romantic destination of stately homes, garden walls and ornate iron gates. The historical truth that these very features were built by enslaved artisans, erected to enclose work yards and to house minority whites who thrived off the economy of slavery, remains excluded from many city landmarks. This panel brings scholars and community members together to encounter the bonds between present day Charleston and the city’s past. A screening and discussion of the film “The Bespoke Tailoring of Mr. Bellamy,” about race and labor integration in 1960s Louisiana, at the Halsey Art Museum will also be shared as a Facebook Live event on Friday, October 15, 2021 AT 6:30 PM – 8 PM. The film stars Stan Brown, Winner of the Best Actor award at the Louisiana Film Festival. Brown will be discussing his performance after the screening and will be introduced by Dr. Paula Feldman. The International Conference on Romanticism was founded in 1991 and aims to further the study of Romanticism across linguistic, national and political disciplines.
