Forest to Furniture: Exploring the History of South Carolina’s Wood Products – Exhibit

Forest to Furniture: Exploring the History of South Carolina’s Wood Products is a new traveling exhibition that will open at the McKissick Museum in Columbia on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. The exhibit is part of the University of South Carolina’s ongoing Wood Basket project, which SC Humanities supported with a Major Grant.

Forest to Furniture: Exploring the History of South Carolina’s Wood Products examines the hidden-in-plain sight stories of furniture and other wood products manufactured in the Palmetto State. It presents a broad overview of the rich and complicated history of lumber, wood products, and forest conservation in South Carolina from the late nineteenth century to the current day. Aided by research undertaken by USC students, the exhibit was guest curated by Lynn Robertson, former longtime McKissick Museum director.

The exhibit is one facet of the University of South Carolina’s Wood Basket project, which includes a major conference that took place in April 2023 in Sumter, an anthology that will be published by USC Press in 2025, an oral history project, the creation of a permanent collection of Sumter-made wood products, as well as expanded archival collections. The goal is “that this work will both shift the narrative about South Carolina’s industrial history and launch important efforts in environmental humanities and other fields.” More information about Wood Basket can be found here: https://digital.library.sc.edu/woodbasket/.

Forest to Furniture: Exploring the History of South Carolina’s Wood Products will be on display at the McKissick Museum through August 2, 2024. The traveling exhibit will then be available to be hosted by other museums and public venues in South Carolina. Contact 803-777-3282 for more information.

The exhibit will have its grand opening on Tuesday, June 4 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at the McKissick Museum, 816 Bull St, Columbia, SC 29208. The McKissick Museum is dedicated to fostering awareness and appreciation of Southern culture and environment.
