Converse College will host a major conference on Southern Culture titled “From Okra to Opera” on April 9-14, 2012 on their campus in Spartanburg. The keynote speakers will be authors Lee Smith and Hal Crowther. SC Humanities supported this conference with a Major Grant in September 2011.
"Okra to Opera: The Conference on Southern Culture" will be an interdisciplinary exploration of the diverse facets of today’s Southern culture: from country music to collard greens, from poetry to paintings, from tobacco twine to the Tupelo Honey Café. More than 50 scholars, artists, and experts from around the Southeast will present a week-long series of events that offers something for everyone. Lee Smith and Hal Crowther will present on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. in Converse College’s Daniel Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
