The University of South Carolina will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the famous Italian patriot and revolutionist with a public lecture, exhibition, and conference on April 3-5, 2008. The opening lecture by Garibaldi scholar Dr. Lucy Riall from the University of London was sponsored in part by SC Humanities through a Major Grant in September 2007.
The three-day event will commence with the opening of the exhibit Garibaldi in His Time: An Exhibit from the Anthony P. Campanella Collection and the lecture by Dr. Riall on the mezzanine level of Thomas Cooper Library on Thursday, April 3 at 5 p.m. Riall’s talk, “Garibaldi: The First Global Hero,” will be based on her recently published book, Garibaldi: Invention of a Hero. Both the exhibit and the lecture are free and open to the public.
The “Garibaldi Abroad” conference is open to the public and will feature six sessions, running from 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 4 and from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 5. Scholars from the United States, Brazil, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom will present on and discuss various aspects of Garibaldi’s life and influence around the world. “Garibaldi Abroad” is one of three international conferences celebrating the heritage of Garibaldi and the only one taking place in the United States.
