The South Carolina Geographic Alliance at the University of South Carolina will present a one-day workshop on Saturday, April 30, 2011, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. in Columbia, SC. The workshop is intended for K-12 teachers as well as the general public and is titled “Immigrants and Communities of Faith: Improving Understanding in South Carolina Classrooms.” SC Humanities supported this event through a Major Grant in September 2010.
This workshop will explore topics related to immigrants and communities of faith, particularly the ethnic and religious diversification taking place across the state and what these social transformations mean for South Carolina. This application was in response to SC Humanities’s Request for Proposals on “The Changing Face of the Palmetto State.” Speakers include Dr. David Damrel of USC Upstate, Dr. Patricia Ehrkamp of the University of Kentucky, Stephen Corsini of Lexington-Richland Five School District, and Dr. Jerry Mitchell of the University of South Carolina Columbia. The conference will take place at the Callcott Building on USC Columbia’s campus.
In addition to the workshop, the South Carolina Geographic Alliance will also develop a poster illustrating the topic of “Immigrants and Communities of Faith” that will include maps and photographs depicting different ethnic and religious geographies across South Carolina. Over 2,000 copies of the poster will be printed and distributed to South Carolina classrooms.
