The Dorchester County Archives & History Center will host a Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony on May 28, 2018 to honor Dorchester County veterans and all military personnel. The Heritage Museum within the Center will also unveil two new exhibits: the Veterans’ Exhibit and the Military Photography Exhibit. SC Humanities helped support these exhibits.
The Memorial Day program will begin at 1:00 on May 28 and will be in the courtyard of the Heritage Museum at 101 Ridge Street, St. George, SC. The day’s programming will include a military procession, keynote speaker Brigadier General (Retired) Henry L. “Hank” Taylor, the unveiling of the two new exhibits, and light refreshments.
The Military Photography Exhibit will consist of framed 11” by 14” photographs taken between the 1940s and the 1970s, with a special interest in the period of World War II through the Korean War. The photographs were selected from those available at the 437th Air Lift Wing Historical Archives at Joint Base Charleston.
The Veterans’ Exhibit spans the Revolutionary War to the most recent conflicts. The exhibit includes artifacts and memorabilia like uniforms, medals, and weapons, and a database is being developed that includes oral histories of veterans from Dorchester County.
