Southern Guitar Festival

On Saturday, June 8, 2019, the Southern Guitar Festival will present two lecture-demonstrations by internationally recognized artists. SC Humanities supported this project with a Mini Grant.

The Southern Guitar Festival and Competition is an annual event that brings world-caliber guitarists to Columbia, South Carolina. The mission is to inspire and educate all music lovers.  In 2019, they will specifically offer two public presentations featuring lectures and demonstrations about guitar music from around the world. The festival will occur at the main branch of Richland Library (1431 Assembly Street, Columbia, SC 29201) and is free and open to the public.

A presentation on “Music Education in China” by the Beijing Guitar Duo will be offered at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 8. They will start with China’s 1978 Reform and Opening-up and then move on to talking about the Chen Zhi school, the methods of teaching, and the different generations of musicians in China.

A lecture and presentation on “Music from Republic of Georgia” by Tariel Iberi will occur at 4:30. Tariel Iberi is an internationally recognized composer from the Republic of Georgia, and he will discuss different styles and elements of Georgian folk music and how he combines these elements with Western elements to create a broad range of styles. He will also demonstrate the use of Georgian folk elements via his own compositions.
