SC Humanities Board of Directors awarded $45,837 in Major Grants to 8 cultural organizations after a February 5, 2010 Board Meeting in Columbia.
The awards were selected through a competitive application and review process and are made possible by SC Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Funded projects include a children's poetry festival, a documentary about South Carolina statesman Charles Pinckney, and an indpendent film festival. Matching community support for the 8 awarded projects totaled: $223,443.

Project Title: The Charleston Jazz Initiative Legends Festival
Project Director: Dr. Karen A. Chandler
Awarded: $6,750; cost-share: $8,000
The College of Charleston will present the Charleston Jazz Initiative Legends Festival on June 4 – 6, 2010. The Festival will present musical performances conbined with interpretive lectures and exhibit programs.

Project Title: The Palmetto Children's Poetry Festival
Project Director: Dr. Kwame Dawes
Awarded: $7,000; cost-share: $12,975
The Palmetto Children's Poetry Festival will take place October 22-23, 2010 in Columbia and will feature five poets who write for children and young adults, as well as other fun events appropriate for both children and adults.

Project Title: 2010 Indie Grits Film Festival
Project Director: Andy Smith
Awarded: $6,000; cost-share: $22,896
The Nickelodeon Theatre will present the 4th annual Indie Grits Film Festival on April 14-18, 2010 in Columbia. Over 35 independent films will be screened, and the festival will include interactive components, including scholar-led workshops and an exhibit.

Project Title: Carolina Stories: Forgotten Founder

Awarded: $7,825; cost-share: $91,475
SCETV will create a biographical documentary about Charles Pinckney titled Forgotten Founder that will be broadcast on statewide ETV as part of the "Carolina Stories" series in September 2010.

Project Title: Stitching Stories: Conversations on Quilts, Community, and the Artists of Gee's Bend

Awarded: $7,350; cost-share: $39,000
The Franklin G. Burroughs – Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach will present a lecture series titled, "Stitching Stories: Conversations on Quilts, Community, and the Artists of Gee's Bend" in conjunction with two traveling exhibits about the Gee's Bend Quilter's Collective in Alabama.

Project Title: The Peach Bush Book Club

This planning grant will support the creation of a documentary about a Marine Corps helicopter squadron during the Viet Nam War.

Project Title: Joe Stukes History Series
Project Director: Francie Dunlap
Awarded: $3,415; cost-share: $10,450
The 2010 Joe Stukes History Series will present Chautauqua-style living history presentations of Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Theodore Roosevelt, and James K. Polk, as well as other programs.

Project Title: Dr. Annie Dove Denmark, President of Anderson University
Project Director: Deborah McEniry
Awarded: $4,997; cost-share: $21,497
Anderson University will create and present an original one-act play about Dr. Annie Dove Denmark, the first female president of a college or university in South Carolina. The play will be presented as part of Anderson University's centennial celebration and will tour around the state.
