Cultural Heritage/Creative Expression: Stormwater Residency Finalists Exhibit

Stormwater Studios in Columbia will present the group exhibit Cultural Heritage/Creative Expression from July 19 – 30, 2023. The exhibit explores themes of identity, culture, immigration, and history. SC Humanities supported this exhibit with a Mini Grant.

Cultural Heritage/Creative Expression features the work of Malik Greene, the Stormwater Resident Artist, as well as other finalists for the residency, including: Nakisa Beigi, Raishad Glover, Lori Starnes Isom, Quincy Pugh, Maya Smith, and Cedric Umoja. Through a diverse range of artistic expressions, the artists comment on their respective cultures, the immigrant experience, and convey emotions through poignant and nostalgic narratives.

There will be two public collateral events while the exhibit is on display. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, July 20th, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., and a closing reception and artist talk will take place on Sunday, July 30th, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. The artist talk will be moderated by a local scholar and will cover topics like diversity and inclusion in the art world, challenges in contemporary art culture, and how environment has impacted the artists’ work.

Resident Artist Bio: Malik Greene captures his mental state as well as the perspective of his own world. His art allows him to stand in the center, painting what is around him. Malik’s desire is to use painting as a form of record-keeping, using his art as a means to be the bridge between creativity and capturing his own personal epic. His work captures an intimate narrative, as well as historical, political and popular culture influences.
