SC Humanities is pleased to make a new Let’s Talk About It series available to the public thanks to the generosity of the Chapin Memorial Library in Myrtle Beach. The new series pairs Steven Johnson’s noted book How We Got To Now: Six Innovations that Made the Modern World with the recent PBS documentary of the same name for a unique multi-media investigation of the history of innovation. Let’s Talk About It is a book discussion series that has long been the backbone of SC Humanities’s library programming in the state.
The new series explores the history of innovation over centuries, tracing facets of modern life (refrigeration, clocks, and eyeglass lenses, to name a few) from their creation by hobbyists, amateurs, and entrepreneurs to their unintended historical consequences. It includes the following volumes and proposed sessions:
How We Got to Now: Six Innovations that Made the Modern World by Steven Johnson
How We Got to Now with Steven Johnson – PBS documentary (360 minutes)
(Accommodates 50)
Six suggested sessions, pairing the book section with the appropriate PBS series episode:
“Clean”
“Time”
“Glass”
“Light”
“Cold”
“Sound”
Libraries and other nonprofit organizations can apply to SC Humanities for a small grant to host a Let’s Talk About It series; the books and film are also loaned to the sponsoring organization. There are over 30 diverse series currently available. Learn more about the Let’s Talk About It program!
