Maps and Madeira at the SC State Museum

The South Carolina Historical Society will host a special event at the South Carolina State Museum on Thursday, September 15 at 6:30 p.m. “Maps and Madeira” will include an exhibit of antique maps and a presentation by noted scholar Katie McKinney, the Assistant Curator of Maps and Prints at Colonial Williamsburg. SC Humanities supported this program with a Mini Grant.

With 350 years of state history comprised in rare books, manuscripts, and visual materials, the South Carolina Historical Society is the state’s largest and oldest private archive as well as a modern historical museum. Its mission is “to expand, preserve and make accessible our collection; to improve knowledge of and encourage focus, interest and pride in the history of our state.”

The Maps and Madeira event will feature some of the most important historical maps in SC Historical Society collection on display. Katie McKinney, the Margaret Beck Pritchard Assistant Currator of Maps and Prints at Colonial Williamsburg, will give a presentaion on historic maps and other interesting topics of historic preservation. Libations and hors d’oeuvres will be offered, with a glass of Madeira to close the evening.  Tickets are $45 for nonmembers and $35 for members.
