South Carolina has more than 50 symbols and songs that represent the rich history and resources of our state. The state flag with its palmetto and crescent is the best-known symbol. But through the years, others have been added including the Carolina Wren, milk and tea, collards, the Carolina wolf spider, blue granite, sweetgrass basket weaving, 3 state dances—the shag, square dance and Richardson Waltz; the Boykin Spaniel, yellow jessamine, goldenrod and several dozen more. Although the first state song was Carolina adapted from a Henry Timrod poem in 1911, a second song, South Carolina on my Mind was added in 1984. Learn more about the various symbols and their history in this presentation.
